Tribal Action Group

The public films of Mu Aye Pu, Jungle Doctor and the village school were made by this group. They are witnesses, not the village.

Tribal Action Group is a film and advocacy project run by Scott Johnson, an Australian lawyer and journalist. Its YouTube channel states a brief: human rights and self-determination for indigenous peoples of South-east Asia. Johnson’s published work began in the 1990s with the Montagnard hill peoples of Vietnam. In later years the camera turned to Myanmar, including Karen State.

At Mu Aye Pu the group’s public record is specific. KNDO Jungle Doctor (from about 2017) follows Dr Sabine in the hills, then at the village: two bears, caves, ordinary forest. Welcome to Mu Aye Pu: Karen State 2019 Village School Initiative shows a school meant to keep young people on their own land, and to make return thinkable. The film names the school as an initiative of the KNDO and the Pink Jade Educational Fund. Those films are among the few moving pictures of this place that anyone can watch.

TAG is not the village, not KNDO, and not a government. Its other films range across Karen, Arakan and the wider war. The Mu Aye Pu titles are pictures of a doctor, a school and a living bank. They are not a map of all Kawthoolei, and they are not a village roll. See History and People.
