Rubanisation

A rural-urban idea from tropical architecture. It was named in ceasefire-year drawings for this river. The village did not become a city.

Karen highland houses. Atmospheric, not a masterplan.

Rubanisation is a word coined by the Singapore architect Tay Kheng Soon, from rural and urban. Since about 2005 he has argued that hyper-dense city and emptied countryside are a false choice. In a 2008 essay he asked Asian cities to behold the countryside and to see one space, not two. The published idea is a marriage of the two: walkable settlements among farms, tropical, mixed, able to feed and employ the people who live there. It is a critique of Singapore’s own model as much as a scheme for somewhere else.

That thought is serious tropical planning. It is not the same as a “free city,” and it is not a title to land. Tay has also written of tropical city form, monsoon architecture, and the rural poor. None of that, by itself, is Mu Aye Pu.

What the ceasefire drawings did with the word

In 2017, papers for this riverside named Tay as a masterplanner and hitched Rubanisation to a “Free Enterprise Community” that would rival “Singapore 2.0.” The same years also described a fifteen-room guesthouse on already-cleared ground, and then thousands of hectares. The numbers do not agree. The guesthouse sketch credits a Mae Sot studio, not Tay. Two ideas sat beside each other. They are not the same.

Those drawings never became the village. Work of that kind was described as on hiatus in 2020. The houses on the bank are still raised timber and bamboo. The river is still the road. A gallery of those drawings is kept as paper. History keeps that chapter short on purpose.

What is already here

In the ordinary sense this village is already rural-urban: a school, a clinic, KNDO country, river trade, guests, and forest at the eaves. That mix is kaw and vernacular building, not a township grid. Rubanisation as Tay published it might have listened to that. The later drawings did not. Managing the mix as the hills open is landscape ecology and houses, rice, kaw, not a brand.
