At Mu Aye Pu
KNDO rangers work the forest around the village. Across Kawthoolei, Wildlife Protection Units of the KNU Forestry Department are supported by KESAN and the Karen Wildlife Conservation Initiative. Hunting taboos, sacred forest and the kaw system are older than any outside organisation. Rangers.
Salween Peace Park (Hkolo Tamutaku K’rer)
Declared 19 December 2018 after a referendum among about 67,800 voting-age residents of Mutraw District. 5,485 square kilometres. Three pillars: peace and self-determination; environmental integrity; cultural survival. Governance is decentralised around 248 kaw.
It is not the village on the Moei. The Peace Park is thousands of square kilometres. Mu Aye Pu is a riverside settlement. The two are not one project. They share a people and a war. The park is a Mutraw / Salween landscape.
Paul Sein Twa of KESAN, and the unnamed villagers of those 348 settlements, are the proper names for that story. The park has been under attack since the 2021 coup, including airstrikes reported in March 2021.
